Visitors arrive on regular and charter flights at the international airport in the state capital Salvador, which handle up to 6 million passengers a year.

Other important tourism regions in the state have airports as well, such as Porto Seguro, Ilhéus and Valença / Morro da Säo Paulo, which receives international charter flights too.

Lençois is the is the gateway to Chapada Diamantina, Barreiras, Paulo Afonso and Caravelas also have airports.

You can fly to most cities in Brazil from Salvador. Make sure you find out how many stops the plane makes, some flights in the Northeast stops at every city along the Atlantic coast line. If you come from abroad you may find it worth buying an brazilian airpass beforehand in you country of origin. Beware that this kind of airpass cannot be bought when once inside Brazil.

Brazilian Air Pass
The two major Brazilian Airlines offer an Airpass to visit the whole country. Should you be interested visiting several cities in Brazil, consider the long distances.

Beware that the Airpass, no matter with which airline you are flying in, has to be purchased in your home country. Should you fly with another company than this two Brazilians, inform yourself with which one your carrier maintains agreement.

Varig Air Pass
For travel to any destination in Brazil served by Varig, Rio Sul or Nordeste Airlines. Up to 5 Flight Coupons. Valid for a maximum of 21 days from date of first domestic flight. Passengers flying to Brazil on Varig Brazilian Airlines, United, America, Continental or Delta Airlines.

Cost: around 400 USD, depending on the number of coupons needed.

Airport services
ATM machines are to the right in the end of the first floor when you arrive. Its advisable to bring some US dollars in cash in case the machines are out or order. Maximum draw limit depends on you own national bank policy, but usually it’s is around 700 reals (approx. 300 USD).

The airport tourist information booth has a list of hotels and useful maps. On the different floors you will find souvenir shopping, internetcafé, money exchange, eating and drinking. The prices will be somewhat more expensive than in the city though.

Airport to city
Domistic and international flights arrive at the Luís Eduardo Magalhäes Airport, 32 km - or 45 minuts - from the city centre. An a/c bus service leaves every 30-40 minuts between 5 am and 22 pm weekdays and 6 am and 22 pm in weekends from the airport to the historic centre - Pelourinho. Look for Praça Sé/Aeroporto. The fare is around 2 USD, no matter how far you choose to go. This service stops at all the hotels along the coast line en route. A taxi to the city will cost you around 70 reals (30 USD) dependent on what area you want to go and also a little on the time of the day.
